The Los Angeles native Pearl Charles stopped by The SoCal Sound Studios for a session with Nic Harcourt on More Music In The Morning with Nic Harcourt + Jet. In between conversations about her musical evolution and sun-drenched California sound, she treated us to a trio of songs including “Middle of the Night,” “Step Too Far,” and “Does This Song Sound Familiar,” ahead of a sold out show later that week at Gold Diggers in Los Angeles.

Pearl Charles grew up in the heart of L.A. and still calls it home, a place that she says deeply informs her music. “There’s something about the California landscape—psychologically and physically—that really feels embedded in what I write,” she said. “There’s space to dream here. There’s room for nostalgia and reinvention.” These songs are a long way from where Pearl began. While never losing the 70s Laurel Canyon folk-rock this new record, Desert Queen leans closer to cosmic Americana. This release marks 10 years of release from Pearl with no end in sight.

Charles described her relationship to genre as fluid. “I love the freedom to move between sounds and eras,” she said. “I grew up on The Byrds and Fleetwood Mac, but I also love synths and disco grooves. To me, it's all storytelling.” That kaleidoscopic approach to songwriting is evident both in her recordings and on stage, where she blends introspective lyrics with dreamy, expansive arrangements.
